[Many people, during my day to day travels over the past 11 years, upon discovering my affiliation with the Islamic faith have put to me many questions. Below are samplings of the most common questions I receive. All answers are by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and/or Minister Farrakhan as they have helped shape my views.] Brother MustafaaTable of Contents
What is Islam?[“Briefly, "Islam" means entire submission to the Will of Allah (God). It is, moreover, a significant name. Its primary significance is the making of peace, and the idea of "Peace" is the dominant idea in Islam” “Islam has five beautiful fundamental principles of belief. The most essential of them all is "The belief in One God." This was the belief (Oneness of God) and preaching’s of the prophets of God from Noah to Muhammad (the last).” “What is Islam? It can be answered in one world -- righteousness.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopWhat is a Muslim?[“A Muslim is one who believes in One God. It is forbidden by Allah (God) for us to believe in or serve anyone other than Himself as a god. He warns us not to set up an equal with Him, as He was the One in the beginning from whom everything had its beginning and will be the One God from which everything will end. He is independent, having no need of anyone’s help, but on the other hand, upon Him we all depend.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) What do you believe about the Bible?[“We believe in the truth of the Bible, but we believe that it has been tampered with and must be reinterpreted so that mankind will not be snared by the falsehoods that have been added to it.” “The Bible means good if you can rightly understand it.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) What do you believe about the Qur'an/Koran?[“We believe in the Holy Qur-an and the Scriptures of all the Prophets of God”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) How do Muslims view Jesus/Do you hate Christians?/Do you believe in Jesus?[“I can speak on behalf of Muslims, and I must say that no Muslim hates a Christian because he’s a Christian and believes in Jesus Christ. This is a mosque, and there are thousands of mosques in America and millions of mosques across the globe. There are 1,250,000,000 (one billion two hundred and fifty million) Muslims, and every one of us believe in Jesus. This book Qur’an refers to Jesus in the same language that Christians refer to him as Jesus the son of Mary, the Messiah. To say we hate Christians because you’re Christians is wrong.”] Answered by Louis Farrakhan) Do you believe in the Biblical prophets?[“We believe in Allah's Prophets and the Scriptures they brought to the people” “The prophets of Islam include: Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Job, David, Solomon, and Jonah.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) How do you feel about non-Muslims?[“ We have respect for them and their professions, and we try to treat them as we treat ourselves, for that matter. We know they are not believers as we are. We know that.” "But as long as they tolerate our faith, we tolerate theirs, and we treat them as brothers."] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopHow do you feel about 9/11 ?[I, on behalf of all the members of the Nation of Islam and on behalf of many millions of Muslims here in America and throughout the world, lift our voices to condemn this vicious and atrocious attack on the United States.] Answered by Louis Farrakhan Why are Muslims committing so much violence/Terrorism in the world?[“Incidents on criminal insanity are now news, and the religion of Islam is no more responsible for one of its subjects succumbing to insanity than the Christian religion is responsible for the steady multitudes of their members becoming so afflicted.” “Christianity has long taught Thou Shalt No Kill, but for centuries the most devastating killings have occurred constantly by Christians killing Christians, killing Buddhists, killing Moslems, killing Jews and killing members of their own families of friends or associates.” “No one can foretell the future or anyone who joins this religious body any more than any other religion can predict the future of all of its individual converts. For such acts of madness..... institutions for the deranged have been built by the federal governments. If this man is found insane -- and his act would suggest that of one insane -- he should be committed to such an institution.” “ In so far as the law of Islam is concerned, the penalty for such acts by a sane person against innocent human beings is death. And if the courts would give us permission to execute such criminals we would do so ourselves. For we desire to put a stop to such crimes -- including thefts -- and we feel that the courts should turn over such criminals to be executed under the real Islamic law. It is our desire to put a stop once and for all to such crimes being committed among our people.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopDid Elijah Muhammad teach white people are Devils?["It’s what He revealed, and what He revealed is what I am teaching and believe in, and this term A devil, or name A devil, is applied to wicked people, people who are by nature wicked.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) ["Well, you have not been saints in the way you have acted toward the darker peoples of the world and toward even your own people. But, in truth, Mr. Russert, any human being who gives themself over to the doing of evil could be considered a devil...America has become a land of people who want to do their own thing, and their own thing is in direct contravention and rebellion against the will of God, which makes any rebel against God an agent of Satan."] Answered by Minister Louis Farrakhan Back to TopWhat are the aims of Islam(Nation of Islam)[‘The aim and purpose of Islam here among my people is to give them a knowledge of self and a knowledge of God, knowledge of their religion, Islam and to separate them in time, that these 17 or 20 million American dark people should go for themselves.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopHow does the Nation of Islam relate to Orthodox Islam, Sunni-Shia Muslims?[“We are the brother of the Muslims not only of Arabia but from all over the entire world, wherever one is found. This I have proved time and time again.”
“Many of the Orthodox Muslims do not want to believe that Allah has appeared in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad or that He has made manifest the truth that has been hidden from their religious scientists”
“Though they do have the Holy Qur-an, many of them do not understand the meaning of it, and some of them believe everything that is prophesied in the Bible and Holy Qur-an about a last Messenger or Prophet being or referring to Muhammad of 1,400 years ago.”
“I will say that neither Jeddah nor Mecca have sent me! I am sent from Allah and not from the Secretary General of the Muslim League. There is no Muslim in Arabia that has authority to stop me from delivering this message that I have been assigned to by Allah, anymore than they had authority to stop Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. “I am not taking orders from them, I am taking orders from Allah (God) Himself.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopDo you believe in Black Supremacy?[“Allah has revealed that the black is the original Man, and that’s what I teach. Now, where this supremacy teaching comes in that is charged by the disbelievers -- that I teach it in order to suit their particular purpose of charging us with being an aggressive movement, or intending to become such, because of the teachings of one being superior over the other.” “We say that the black man is the first man in the sun, and then they take this and just change it around -- that he is teaching supremacy. And that we are not doing.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopWho are the fruit of Islam? Are they some kind of Military group within the Nation of Islam?[“The Fruit of Islam means the first converts to Islam here in America and the first people to be cleaned and made fit to be called Muslims.”
“And their training is on this basis, as being Muslims, to keep in practice, not just say it is their faith or belief. You must put into practice the principles of Islam that you believe in and serve as an example for others who would accept Islam.” “They take physical training and exercises in many ways to keep physically fit and healthy and to try to get away from many of the physical ailments that they have suffered long before coming into the knowledge of Islam.” “And trained into the knowledge of what the aims and purpose of Islam are, they are to clean up a people who are not clean, morally as well as spiritually, in America and to make them fit to become good members of the society.”] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopDo you believe in violence?[“You know it is absolutely false to accuse us of violence or preparing for violence. Allah (God) forbids us to do such a thing. He is the One who will do our fighting for us against you, as Jehovah did for Moses and Israel” “You and the world know that we seek to do no evil to anyone. We carry no weapons of evil, we are trying to be respected and we respect you as the rulers of the land.” “We are not going to take part in any violence whatsoever. We're not going to do anything other than what we are doing. That is trying to deliver the truth to our people and teach them that they are supposed to be Muslims, and that means they are supposed to be righteous people and that we have shed all things that pertain to wickedness.’ “ We have stripped ourselves of harm to let you know that we are not people of violence. We don't intend to attack you. We have no idea or knowledge of anything like that coming in the future.’] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to TopWho are you voting for in '08'Barack, Hilary or a republican?["He would have to be in sympathy with us and he would have to have some knowledge of the aims and purposes of Islam in America...Certainly there is power in voting if there is justice for the so-called Negroes. But the crooked political machine of America can always keep the once-slaves, free slaves…The Black man should be very serious and careful about his voting because 90 per cent of the Black votes cast are cast by ones who do not have the knowledge of what they are casting their vote for. I still say, as I have said for many years, vote for Allah (God) to be your ruler and come follow me."] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) [“It doesn't make any difference who we get. FDR once said, "I can't do what you ask me to do even though I know its right. Until you develop the leverage to make me do it, it won't get done." If we form a movement we will have the leverage to make the President do what is right by the mass of American people.”] Answered by Minister Louis Farrakhan
Back to TopDo you hate Jews?/Didn't Minister Farrakhan say hateful things about Jews? ["My problem with the Jewish community is that most of the Jewish people feel that if you criticize any act of Jews, that is anti-Semitic. If I criticize Arabs, if I criticize the government of the United States, if I criticize White people or my own Black people, I'm not considered anti-Black, anti-Arab. Why should anybody who criticizes Jewish behavior that ill affects Black people and their pursuit of happiness be considered anti-Semitic?...I am not anti-Semitic. I do not hate Jewish people. I hate actions of any people, including my own, that are evil and are obstructive to justice, freedom and equity.] Answered by Minister Louis Farrakhan) Back to TopWhy did you change your name?/Should black people consider a name change? ["One of the first and most important truths that must be established in this day is our identity...The Black man from the root beginning is from a Black Father. Therefore, he should go in the Name of his Black Father. As I have said, as long as the so-called American Negro is blind to the knowledge of self, he does not know by what name he should be called. You could call him anything and he would answer to it, for he does not know his True Name...They have no meaning as to a human being, such as Mr. Fish. We are human beings and should not be called Mr. Fish. They name you Mr. Hog. You are not a Hog. They call you Mr. Bird. We should not be called bird. We are not winged fowl. They are names which are worthless to human beings.] Answered by Elijah Muhammad) Back to Top["There are a lot of people my age that talk about the lyrics of rap artists. They are upset that the rap artists speak of killing, using drugs, the misuse of our women, ripping off people and killing police, but these lyrics do not come from apples that have fallen from some other tree. The society says it wants the rappers to clean up their lyrics, but the society does not want to clean itself up...What society would like to do with the young people is break the mirror, rather than look in the mirror and clean themselves up. If your lyrics reflect what is in the society, and society cleaned itself up, then you would have to talk about something else...Your potential to change reality is so great that, if you learned the skill of words and how to use words."] Answered by Minister Louis Farrakhan
